On Sunday we had to come off the M5 at junction 27 to avoid a blockage between J25 & 26.
As a result we ended up spending an hour and a half crawling around Taunton with everyone else who was put off the M5.
We spent some time moving past Taunton Crown court and the building is fascinating to look at.
We wondered about it's history and having got home and googled we can find nothing about when it was built, history etc.
Does anyone here know or have any links that we can use to find out about this impressive looking building.

thanks

I'm sorry that I can't really help but, looking at the place, I'm wondering if it's really as old as it's pretending to be. The tower, to the right of the entrance, looks like Victorian neo-gothic(?) architecture to me:

Hi Mollymoo:

I've actually been there as a witness and have given evidence. It is a nice building, although, as you now realise, it's a bit of a pain to get to because of its location.

Anyway, enough waffle, if you log onto the link I've attached and just search for "Taunton Crown Court" it'll hopefully give you the details you requested.

Yes we wondered if it was a newer built building -built in older style but knowing nothing about architecture we wanted to find out about it as it is such an interesting and imposing building. It is a little odd that I couldn't find any reference to it on the web other than facts about court cases.

Sorry, but I actually posted this in the early hours and for some reason it didn't register.

Anyway, if you log onto the below link, search for Taunton Crown Court, you'll find what you need.

PS. I've actually been there as a witness and have given evidence - very exciting (not!).

I am not sure that the castle and the court are the same building......it says that courts were held at castle until mid 19th C and it doesnt quite look like the court building I saw.
I could be wrong though.
