With the exception of drink driving, all points last for three years. But you're not allowed to have them removed from it for a further year. Hope this doesn't waste your time.
In spite of the above which is quite correct it is worth noting that most insurers will ask if you have had any convitcitons in the last 5 years, even if they are spent or removed.

SeeJayPea is quite correct except that points is not an option for driving with excess alcohol (although it is an option for being in charge of a vehicle with excess alcohol). Driving with excess alcohol carries a mandatory twelve month minimum disqualification and if the magistrates find special reasons not to disqualify, no points are awarded.

The endorsement for excess alcohol lasts for ten years (in so far as a second offence within this time attracts a minimum three year ban) and can be removed after eleven years.
