Hi all

My darling Dad died last week and I would really like to transfer his personalised numberplate onto my car. Can anyone tell me the best way to do this?

Thanks in advance

Is it yours to transfer? It will be an asset and have to be dealt with along with the rest of his estate.

Only the registered keeper of the vehicle can transfer the number plate, so your dad's car will have to be registered in the name of the new registered keeper.

My Dad left everything to my Mum and she is more than happy for me to have it. She's selling the car asap so I wanted to deal with it all before it went. I'm a bit worried I could lose it now!

Your mum must change the Registered Keeper details to her own name, then she can put the original number plate back on the car and transfer the private plate to you.

Sorry. Just playing.

Ignore me.
Go down to your local dvla office and you might be able to change ownership and get the plate changed in one go.

I just recently got a different car and went down the dvla to change my personal plate from my old car to the new one and it only took 8 days and cost 80.

You can also download the forms you need from the dvla website
We do JJ.
