may be due to the cold ?

Because its a Vectra. They're crap.

I speak from experience.

If Vauxhall had any decency they would give me a few grand for expenses and another couple of grand for compensation.

Not ALL Vauxhalls are crap... my 4X4 Turbo Calibra starts and runs okay... and its still got the same plugs in it as when I bought it 8 years ago....
The air control valve wants cleaning.
I think you will find its likely to be the Air Idle valve, this will cause the car not to idle properly and in extreme cases it will cause the car to cut out at idle speed. The air idle valve can be clean out (you will need to remove the unit to do this - 2 bolts only), although this can only be done a few times before the unit itself will need replacing.
