The sunroof glass of my 1997 Mondeo Ghia was smashed during the night by vandals and I have been quoted 854.32 to supply and fit a replacement.
This seems outrageous and I am wondering if I could get a plastic one for a fraction of that price?
I am an elderly pensioner who knows nothing about cars.
Can someone offer me any advice PLEASE

Hi, I would look on EBay to start with you can get a lot of used parts on there if not type in 247 car parts the will search for you, You have to put in all your detail's within 24hrs they will call/ email you should the find one, To put the sun roof in requires patience time & if you rush the job you will pay with water leaks, if you cannot do it yourself get a local Family garage, to price the Glass + labour 250 300 tops or go through your Insurance that's what you pay for.

Thank you very much that's exactly what I'm going to do.

I'm grateful for the prompt answer and the advice given.
Hi, Any luck? If I can help ask. T.W.R.
Question Author
Yes Indeed.

I was just about to come on and post a thankyou note to you.

I did as you suggested and via 247 car parts I have found a sunroof glass for 20 plus 10 delivery. When I think that I was quoted 854, even if it costs me a couple of hundred to have the glass fitted I am a winner.

I am very, very grateful to you and wish I could send you something to show my appreciation.

My best regards

Les
Hi Les, You have already paid me by your reply, as you know on this site that means a lot, I do not know if you are Mechanical minded but I would do the job yourself as it is a straight forward job but obviously if you feel unsure you should get the job done for under 20. that site you used are very good there are also many site for your type of car, If you go on Google type in your car's details it will give you details of traders with very many good prices, myself i have a 10yr old BMW E36 Coupe (No I am not rich or a poser LOL) I look for parts on EBay etc but will never pay the stupid prices that the dealer ask, if you take your time you will find what you want, anyway Les I hope you get it sorted I will have a Brandy on you tonight & say cheers.

Regards Trebor.

Hi Again Trebor.

I doubt I would be able to do it myself.

I am usually to be found a few blocks from here in the crossword section of Quizzes & Puzzles and unfortunately , while being able to solve the Times crossword in 5 minutes I am an absolute klutz with the important things in our daily lives - electrics, plumbing cars etc.

I now know where to come for friendly advice.

Cheers Les
Hi again, just a tip should you see a Windscreen replacement van on your travels it would be worth having a word with the driver regards what price he/she would charge, if I am right the glass is held in by either 2 metal through plastic sleeves through glass to metal brackets?? But it may be of the type that is sealed into the retracting thin bracket, I will have a look & get to you.
Hi again, I will leave you with 2 items on EBAY look into the car parts area type in your car + what you needed there is a comp in Stoke On Trent Staffs for Mondeo Spares only, 2nd, looking at the Glass when in its holder/ slider within the roof, if you work the motor as if the glass was still in, wind it to the closed position then tilt you should be able to see the brackets i am on about but the decision will obviously be your Les.

Good Luck, Trebor.
