i have received a parking fine. on parking the pay and display was out of order so i bought a ticket from the next available machine. on returning to machine, i had a fine, saying ticket not valid, the car park i had parked in was private, the next machine was the council pay and display. i have paid the 50 fine with my letter of appeal, which has been rejected by the private security firm, who are not interested in whether machine was out of order or not. where do i stand

You shouldn't have paid it .
As a private car park they have much less power( if any) than a council one.
You should have sent a letter saying why you refused to pay the 50 , they would then have had to take you to court.
It is doubtful they would have done this as they would not have risked losing .
Sorrry to say you have little or no chance of getting your 50 back.
I'm not sure why you thought that a ticket from a council machine would cover you on a different (and private) car park.
You stand 50 down.....end of!

Always argue before you pay. No point if arguing after as others (smarter than you) are not going to give you a refund!
