hi,
just bought a alhambra people carrier. when you turn the wheel left or right, the steering pump( I think) makes a terrible groaning noise, very loud. its o.k when you are driving along, but when parking or reversing etc. it is really bad. it seems to be better if you rev the engine(diesel) .
any ideas? do I worry , or will it just carry on making the noise and I put up with it?
thanks,
doris.

Doris, check the level, colour and smell of the steering fluid - then report back.

could also be a wheel bearing thats worn
Unless anyone knows better the fluid should be red with a strong smell, it may have been filled up with the wrong type of oil
how many miles has it done ?..does it make the noise on full lock when sationary ?..The fluid isnt always red there are variations, VWs take a greenish fluid and Seat are part of VW...
It really does sound like a noisy pump they are available from factors on an exchange basis..
Check for leaks, Air Locks, Power Steering Belts Slack
