Hi Guys and Girls

I am thinking about buying a second hand sports car, and quite fancied a Boxster....until I told my male friends.....they said for the money I should look at the Audi TT (test drove one and felt like I was driving a letter box!) or a BMW Z4......

Stil not sure.......

I have 15-20K to play with.....what would you choose.....I'd be interested in your suggestions...

I've heard that about the audi tt. What about a Mercedes SLK? Bit of poke, great in the summer and drives like a dream. I've had two and am in love!!!
Don't get it - a Boxster is a Porsche.

What do you want - a car or a status symbol?
Question Author
Barmaid- I like the shape of the new SLKs actually....they are a little more rounder. Good suggestion

Ethel- I guess I work hard enough, and have saved hard enough so yes, I want to purchase a fun car, and have a little status too.
You probably will be lucky to get a new shape SLK for 15-20k. When i bought mine a year ago, they were still coming in quite expensive. But I have to say, my local Merc garage are EXCELLENT in servicing and aftercare - they look after me really well. They even wash the car for me if I am feeling cheeky on a Friday and pop down for a natter!!!
We obviously view cars differently. Whenever I see a 'status' car I think 'there's another plonker'.

To me a car is just something to get me from A to B - I had much more fun riding my British motorbikes many years ago. I can think of much better things to do with my money.
difference is though ethel its costs a lot more money in insurance and petrol to get from A to B in a porsche. I can see where you are coming from !
Question Author
Barmaid.....:-(....sadly I think you are right.....the new shape is a little out of my price range.

Ethel...Although we are going to clearly disagree on the car issue....I can understand your comments on motorbikes, as we have several super bikes in this household...none British however.... My husband takes your view....he is happy to seen as a plonker driving my cars, but isn't the plonker who fills it up with petrol. Muggins here does that!
if you want a fun sporty car, have a look at the Mazda RX8, avoids all the brand snobbery and is great to drive. A few people at work have them and I took one out for a spin the other day.

If you drive a Boxster, a lot of people will look at it and say to themselves and anyone in the car with them "Didn't quite get to where she wanted in life. if he did, she'd have bought a 911 instead"
Plus forgot to add, with your budget you're close to being able to get a new one
Question Author
Cakeyboy.....Never thought of Mazdas....Hhmmmmmmm
Cheers for that.
don't you need a little willy to own a porsche?
Boxster is a poor man's Porsche. It is a dilution of the real thing - a Carrera.

Have a look at Lotuses, the Exige for example. I have an Exige, it does 0-60 in 2.5 seconds and will see off any naff pansy Porsche.

dont you hate gas guzzlers whiffey?
If I were you, when you have narrowed down your choice of car - to say, 3 - hire them for a week each to get a 'real feel' for them - and all their individual little nuances - before parting with your hard saved dosh ;o)
Question Author
Whiffey.....Just had a quick look at the Lotus....thats a seriously sexy car......!
I tried a Lotus out, but thought that they are a bit basic inside Clarey and really are a made for blokes who love their cars!! Try getting in and out of one in a ladylike fashion too. Impossible!

Ethel - I may be a plonker because I like nice cars, but we each like different things. World would be very dull if we were all the same. Plus I do thousands of miles some weeks, and having a nice car to do it in makes the world of difference to me.
EXIGE 0-60 in 2.5 secs?- you mean 4.5secs surely?
Poor mans Porsche is a 924
Yes.

I'd prefer to spend my 15-20K on a second hand Jaguar XK8 or XKR, rather than a tacky Porsche Boxster. But each to their own.
M3 if you want power and handling.

Lancer evo8 if you want a family car that goes like stink !
Hey!! Listen you lot - we've got a Boxster, and it might only be a "little Porsche", and might not be very pretty - but she runs brilliantly. Think it just depends on what car grabs your imagination really.
