I have a W reg Mondeo 2 ltr. automatic (Petrol) . Is there any advantage in having a crypton-type diagnostic check and tune up like I used to have on older non electronic cars with carbs, distributors etc ? A locally franchised mobile tuner always did a great job for about 30.

No,,, there is no advantage to having such a check done, The variables such as mixture strength, ignition advance, idle speed, etc. should all be controlled by the E.C.U. and are not adjustable. so long as the car is regularly serviced, and it seems to be running o.k. with no poor performance, or warning lamps illuminated, you should have no need to have expensive diagnostic checks done.
you cant adjust fule mixture etc but what a lot of boy racer halfwits do is have the ecu re-mapped for better performace but rarely do you see any difference above 15-20 bhp.

Thankyou, both. That's what I thought. And by the way, David, at 70 I think my boy racer days are numbered !
hi derek try this
1 switch off ignition(pos o)
2 open up engine bay and locate fuse box next to battery
3 remove fuse 4 and wait 30 seconds
4 remove fuse 11 and wait 15 min it is important not to touch the car in this time
5 after 15 min replace fuse 11 and wait 30 seconds
6 replace fuse 4 and wait 30 seconds
7 close engine bay and enter car
8 turn key to position 2, starting engine
9 leave car idling for 15 min ar might stall in this step;just restart and continue waiting the 15 min the idle will level out in this time
10 take car out for test drive for 60 min in varied driving conditions drive moderately-do not drive the engine hard in this time do not exceed 3000rpm
11 after 60 min of driving reach speeds of 60-70 mph depending on road conditions and speed limits
12 switch off engine leave for 2 min and restart
13 compleated you should see a vast improvement from now on
