how long is a piece of string?

I took 18 lessons and passed first time, then again I know of people who took twice that.

All depends on what type of driver you are
I read once that on average, you need one for every year of your life.
depends on how c r a p you are!!!!!
Exactly, and some people just cannot ,and will never be able to, drive... those who have failed 4 or 5 times should just forget it. Even if they pass at attempt 7 (fluke) they will be one of those dangerous, hesitant drivers you see risking the lives of others...
I had 18 lessons then I was booked in for a test, but by the time I had took the test i'd had 41 lessons and I passed first time....
spaced & tizzi are both correct to a point. At the end of the day it`s down to aptitude. I remember a pupil who was a Royal Navy Pilot & he was totally hopeless. It`s horses for courses. The older you are usually the harder it becomes (more sense of mortality probably!). Motorcyclists are tricky as well, `Cos they still judge gaps as if they`re only 2 feet wide! Only just under 1/2 the people taking car tests pass overall, & only about 1in5 1st time.
It depends on if your driving instructor is skint or not on how many lessons you need !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
