the answer is NO,as you are not taxed, the car must not be on the road.
I sympathise with your situation but it's not worth taking the risk. See the link for more info where it confirms norman's comments -

Also you can renew the tax online. I know you cant show the disc for a couple of days but it think that you can still drive as long as you have applied online.
johnny37 may mean well by suggesting you can drive without road tax if have applied on-line but the law is that you must have a valid tax disc displayed.

I would think it unlikely you would be prosecuted if you have applied already but all the references I can find imply that you must have a valid tax disc displayed if the car is on the road.
Don't take the risk. Sod's Law decrees you will be caught. It happened to a friend of mine.
exactly the same thing happened to me,(appart from the strike thing) I got someone to drive me the 40 miles to the nearest dvla office!..it's not worth the risk
I wanted to drive to Brighton on a Sunday and my tax had expired. I went into the local police station and explained that I'd be renewing my disc on the Monday, they told me that if I was to be pulled over it would be unlikely that I'd be done as it was only a couple of days out of date, they seem to want to catch the people who never tax thier car.
I took my chances and got away with it.
my tax ran out on friday so i phoned the dvla for advice regarding putting it on a sorn for 4 or 5 days. they said so long as the vehicle stays in the garage it is ok. they warned me that if the vehicle is seen on a public road it may be seized.hope this info helps
if the car shows up on the dvla system as being taxed then all they can do you for is failure to display (30 quid fine). and even then they will rescind this if you send them a photocopy!!!
I've just bought an ex mobility car and the dealer told me that the tax had to be obtained from a post office so I don't think that you would be able to do it online. Is it worth the risk of driving it untaxed even if you intend to tax it ASAP?
Does a Guinness label still work OK?.....
The failure to display rule is a catch-all situation. I still dont think you will be fined if you have applied online. The police have access to the DVLA computer and would not waste time fining you for failure to display, even if its fallen off the windscreen.
Blackcat77 - anyone can apply onlines as long as the car is insured and mot'd. DVLA have access to the insurance databases. It doesnt even have to be insured by the registered keeper like the old system.
The same thing happened to me. The dealer said I could drive from the dealers (in Burnley) directly to the DVLA (in Manchester) to change the car from disabled use and obtain a tax disc as I had the log book in the car with me should I be stopped. I did this, but after reading these replies I'm not sure whether I was right to do so.
