I have a 1997 Hyundai Accent which has today been reluctant to accelerate up through the gears. Changing gears isn't a problem but it is slow to accelerate and the engine has started to race if I try - it feels and sounds as if the car is out of gear. Any ideas anyone and is it likely to be a big (ie. expensive!) job

Sounds like your clutch is slipping. Could be due to high mileage, oil contamination (leak from g/box or engine) driving style of driver(s) e.g. holding car on hill for some time instead of using foot/handbrake; riding the clutch i.e using as a footrest. A friend of mine just had an Astra estate done, and was quoted about 400 by Vauxhall & Mr Clutch - apparently on her model they have to drop the front subframe! Let`s hope yours is more conventional to repair, but you will want to know what caused it to go.
you need to drop the front subframe on most cars nowadays to get the gearbox out. the pain in the a r s e one was the first mondeo.
Labour should be no more than 4 hours and we charge 55 an hour cant rember prices but sounds like the clutch to me
