Ford Orion Whiring

Hi,
I've been driving my car more than usual lately and it's been running really well.. until now.
I heard this weird whiring noise coming from the front end last night before I put it in the garage but I thought nothing of it to be honest.
This morning I went to start it and all I got was 'Click' then nothing. I know there was not much petrol in it but it was not empty. I opened the electric windows which have always been a bit slow but otherwise the interior lights etc were fine.
With a little help I got it to the top of a hill and it bump started fine. I reversed back up the hill and parked and noticed the whiring noise again. It seems to be coming from the engine. Also my other half swore blind she could smell a faint smell of burning plastic.
Were stumped. She says lack of fuel or fuel pump problem (the petrol isn't going as far as it used to). I tend to think belts/alternator.
The car is an 1989 (G) Orion 1.6
Anybody got any ideas. We'd really appreciate them before taking her to the local garage and their expensive head scratching!

There are stil Ford Orions on the road !
First thing to check would be the battery.
It could be that it's given up the ghost after all this time and batteries need a lot more oopmh in the colder mornings to get the engine turned over than to power the lights and windows.
The whirring noise could just have been the cooling fan running after the engine was off, some cars do that if they have been run for a while.

It could be that the cooling fan behind the radiator, is on all the time, this would cause the battery to go flat is it is left for a long time. It could also give the burning plastic smell as it will overheat. If you can start the car with the engine cold, the cooling fan should not be running. It could be caused by the fan temperature sensor going faulty or a wiring fault.
