After much argument the spray shop which did a lousy job on my 1986 Mk 2 Cabriolet cavalier, have agreed to do the respray.Given that the first job had rust showing through before 12 months was up, ...in fact it was worse than when i delivered the car .
How long should i expect the new job to last?

First of all - fair play to the motor - rare as hens teeth!

Secondly it depends on the garage, and what kind of job they do. Decent garages will add anti - corrosion substances on - but its best to ask the garage before they do the work - some give 12 months to 3 years!

Got any pics of the motor?
