Driving Test

My hubby is taking his driving test again on Saturday, he has failed quite a few times because his nerves get the better of him, he is a good driver but just turns to jelly when the examiner gets in the car. any ideas to calm him down, he will not go for hypnotherapy. As the test gets closer it even affects his sleep making him tired too. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Tough one. A good breakfast and PMA, I suppose is the only way.
Hmmm, all i suppose that if he tries to think of nice things and makes sure he has a few breaths, that will help.
But i personally reckon you should have a good sex session with him before he takes his test, to clear his mind and get him in a good mood...
I suffered from a really jittery leg (from nerves) in my tests (it took me three attempts to pass) on my 3rd test I took a few drops of some Bachs Rescue Remedy which totally calmed my nerves and I ended up passing that time!

pa__ul, he says it is the examiner sitting there with his clip in a test environment, he is nervous being tested, thats all I can get out of him. This time I have convinced him not to tell anyone the date of his test thinking he might be scared of failing again then having to tell people.

We went to the doc and he suggested councelling but I don't see how that will help.

I have heard of the Bachs Rescue Remedy, does it really work?
Or even Kalm's tablets. I don't think they work, but maybe they do psychologically. I bought some for my sister last week when she had her test and was in bits a few days before.

She said she felt really confident and passed first time. She believed me, I think, but she's always been a bit dippy- bless her. :o)

That's quite a good idea, newlywed. The second time I didn't tell anyone when I had my test and only after I'd passed. I didn't feel so pressured. x
A hour in the car before the test with your instructor helps.

I was cautious on my test and got a minor for holding up traffic but made sure the examiner saw I was checking everything.

Small talk with the examiner about the weather etc when starting off.

Maybe download the test routes.

I would have said don't book it on a hot busy Saturday afternoon - although he's stuck now.

Thanks Whiskey, do you get them from a chemist or health food shop? I am sure I can convince him they will work.
Pretty much anywhere sells them, I think, newlywed: Boots, Superdrug, etc. There are two different versions though- the herbal ones and the... not-herbal ones. Just make sure you don't get him the night-time ones! :o)

Also, as Aschenbach says, make sure he makes it really obvious that he's checking his mirrors (really exaggerate moving his head and not just his eyes).

they definitely worked for me, I felt no nerves what so ever after taking it about an hour before my test(maybe I overdosed!). my mums friend also suffers from mild panic attacks when she is in small spaces and she always takes a few drops to calm her down too.

pa__ul - what a cracking idea, don't know if it will work but def. worth a try, should be a giggle if nothing else!!
My brother is the same.He's a great technical driver but when it comes to the driving test he just gets so nervous.A psychiatrist I know says if you don't pass your driving test on the third attemp you shouldn't drive at all but I think that as he keeps going for driving tests he will become more used to them and the idea of having one will not seem so terrifying.Why don't you try and reassure him that it doesn't matter if he fails,it might make him feel more at ease? He's probobly just worried about letting you down. Good luck to your hubby xxx
It took me 4 times to pass - I got really nervous as well. I only had a 3 week gap between my third and fourth test (if he fails this one, try and book the next one for as soon as possible), which meant I didn't have too long to work myself up about it. And the day before it, I had a nice day at home - a bbq with the family. So my advice would be do something nice the day before. I found kalms never really helped me, but bachs rescue remedy does help.

(I found I was so nervous I couldn't even talk to the examiner, I found it easier to do it in silence...so chatting to the examiner wasn't the best advice in my case!) And try to get your husband in the mindset, that even if he does fail it this time, he'll just do it again. And again if need be...you get the point! Hope he passes - good luck!
Kalms tablets recommended.

Again I cannot confirm they have any physical effect, it might be psychological, but hey, it doesn't matter.

A gentle drive before the test, then about half an hour sitting in the car relaxing, eyes shut, not talking.
