Just been South down M42 / M6 and back and went through what appeared to be a toll. Didn't see much except 'toll' signs going south but noticed a 4 car charge coming back north. Never heard of this. Is it active and if so how does it work and will I get billed somehow for this?

Thankis to anyone who replies.

I often travel on the M42 - there is no toll on the M42 ONLY the M6 - which can be a nightmare to bypass as there are so many lanes of traffic, but so far I have managed it ! I think you just observed the signage warning of an approaching toll. Confusing though.
The sign you saw is on the M42 near the junction with the M6 toll road, which you didn't actually travel on. No you won't get billed.

Thanks for your replies. Funny thing was the sat nav did say that I was on a toll road and it certainly wasn't obvious what was going on! Didn't see anything to explain except a list on charges going Northbound.
THE WHOLE SET UP OF THE TOLL ROAD IS SILLY.

ive nearly been caught out more than once. there are so many lanes and so little information.
i think it needs to be signed well in advance and marked on the road surface.
north bound on the m6 is nearly dangerous... drivers nipping in and out of lanes because theyre not sure where they should be...

if you didnt go through a "toll booth", you didnt use the toll road.
