Can anyone point me in the direction of finding out recent building regulations pertaining to the space between houses? I have tried various websites including my local council, but merely get the runaround.

can they really do this to me or will they be compasionate?

Building Regulations are a UK thing, nothing to do with the EU. Generally you can't build a new dwelling closer than one metre from the property boundary. You do mean Building Regulations and not Planning Permission, I trust.
