starting my renault megane

why do I have a problem sometimes starting my renault megane? Everything comes on (lights etc) but nothing from the engine...it doesn't even turn over. I have had to wait between 10 minutes and 2 hours to be able to start the car. Is this a common problem? If so can it be rectified
