Different people will see have their own ideas. For me, I'm perfectly happy with the AA's routefinder, which has been around much longer than most of its rivals but is frequently improved to ensure that it offers plenty of flexibility:

the common sense route finder/checker is a definate.
check what the route finder says before setting off so you don't go bristol - london. via manchester!
