Does anyone know of any good internet sites which explain very simply how to use a surveyors level? A work colleague has been able to get his hands on a 20+ year old quickset (pre laser) complete with staff and tripod. He intends to use it on a large on farm building project. I have given him a quick 'masterclass'. However, a site with good illustrations which I can print would save me a lot of time.

Found this word document which takes a couple of seconds to download and covers all the basics. It is ESSENTIAL that you do a 2 peg test (described t the bottom of the doc) to check that the level is level. This should be done at least once a week and immediately if this is a 'new' level to you. It only takes 5 minutes but can save hours of problems later on.

Thanks folks. Although my preference has always been for the collimation method as opposed to the rise and fall. I shall stick with this so as not to confuse him. By the way he got the lot for 10. I checked it and found it to be spot on.
