I recently had a cambelt replaced and the garage called me to say that the water pump was leaking slightly so I had that replaced at the same time. I can't see why it should be replaced if it's ok. I guess the advice you got was that it would be more expensive to get the water pump replaced at a later time because of the labour costs involved.
on most cars water pumps should last a lifetime, it is easier to replace when new cam belt is replaced and less expensive because the cam belt will have to come off if the pump goes, they are not too expensive, but a costly job too do on there own. hope this helped.l
