I have a Cavalier 1.7 TD (M reg) which will not start off the key. When turning the key, all the dash lights illuminate but all I get is a clicking sound from the solenoid. I have replaced the bettery and glow plugs, cleaned all ground contacts and had the starter bench tested (which is only a year old), with apparently no fault found. Any help and advice would be grately appreciated.

dodgy solenoid, or stuck starter motor, have you tried giving the starter motor a wollop with a hammer

Kuj, how much of a difference would it be in the bench test to that of working under load on the Cav ?

Santa.
It sounds like your alternator has died.

It could be as simple as a snapped fan belt.
It is possible your engine could be seized or hydraulicking, is your coolant level down or has your timing belt went and the pistons are touching the valves preventing the engine from turning, will your car start with a tow (only try if timing belt and there is no apparent loss of coolant)
first of all you should check all electrical connections
earths etc(sounds like it is just a bad connection)
sounds like you need to get your alternator checked
