Difficulty putting into gear - intermittent

I drive a Y reg Fiat Marea Weekend (estate) which generally runs really well.
Today I drove it to work ok and when i come to use it at lunchtime it would not go into gear. I eventually gopt it moving but it struggled to go into gear throughout my short trip (it 'crunched' when it went into reverse)
I phoned garage abnd took it in - car was fine driving to and from garage - bl@@dy typical - garage said it was probably 'the heat'.
Called in at shop on way home and when I tried to drive off - wouldn't go in gear!
I called my husband who came to the rescue - it went straight into gear no problem!
NB/ i tried pumping the clutch a little to get fluid going and also slipping the clutch briefly.
Any ideas?
