It stands for nothing.

According to a book I have on XR Fords it just sounded good. The origin was a sporting tag to the American Cougar: the XR-7, a derivative of the Mustang, in 1967.

I don't have that, I just have 'Report This Answer' which seems to be solely for complaints. Any ideas?
