Yes!

A series of springs or a diaphram spring keeps the clutch plate in hard contact with your flywheel so transfering power from your engine to your gearbox and on to the wheels when you are driving, because your clutch plate is worn out this is no longer happening and the clutch is slipping.

So when you accelerate the power is no longer transfered to the wheels and the engine just revs up.

When you press your foot on the clutch pedal the springs are compressed so causing the clutch plate to move away from the flywheel causing the clutch to slip so you can move of from rest.
