If you use the route-finding facility at http://www.viamichelin.com the route details provided will include the total toll charges (e.g. I've just checked a route from Paris to Rome and the toll charges are 123.60 Euros).

If you use the 'customise your routes' feature you can change the currency to pounds (or dollars or . . .) and you can enter the fuel economy figures for your vehicle so that the route-finder can accurately predict your fuel costs for the journey based upon current (or predicted) fuel prices in each country. If you want to avoid toll-roads you can also request a toll-free route.

Try caplis.fr or sapn.fr for France, and teleroute.it or viacard for Italy.
If you use the correct lanes at the toll booths you can pay by credit cards. Usually these are the quickest moving lanes anyway.
