How do I Format DVD rewritable disk, not got any software and have googled but without success.

It's surprising that you haven't got any appropriate software as this is usually supplied with DVD Re-writers (or the PCs which contain them). The software that comes with these products is usually from Nero or Roxio but you'll have to pay for these if they weren't bundled with your PC. The following software is free and seems to do what you require (but please note that I've not used it myself):

Alternatively, if you are using windows XP, right click the DVD disc drive and select erase or format disc. If this option is not shown, right click on the disc drive and go into proprties, you should see a section which allows you to select the drive as default copier. Now should be able to right click and erase.
