Could be thermostat, water pump, blocked radiator etc, in other words best get it checked over. Things can get expensive if the overheating is not addressed.
If it stays in the normal range when you are moving along but goes into the red when you are stopped in traffic, then probably its a problem with the cooling fan or its thermostatic switch.
Otherwise as above get it checked out by somebody.
If the car does not boil over and drives normaly the problem is probably just the sender unit playing up and giving the wrong readings on your gauge, they are cheap and easy to replace.
<XMP>I have the same problem. The temp gauge is going up and down again back to the middleand I can hear the cooling fans kicking in too often. I've had replaced the following:</XMP>

  • <XMP>sender unit (cylinder head temperature sensor)</XMP>

  • <XMP>water pump</XMP>

  • <XMP>thermostat</XMP>

  • <XMP>radiator</XMP>

  • <XMP>heating matrix</XMP>
<XMP>Bills totalling over 1000 now. I'm in dispute with Ford over this, I'll let you know the outcome.</XMP>
