I have a similar BMW 320D. Whenever my hubby gets in after I have driven, he plays about with the buttons to sort the heating out. I am not sure what I do, whether it has anything to do with the button that stops smelly air coming in.  Sorry, I am sure this is not a lot of use, try your manual or consult a dealer.

This is a common problem with the climate control unit in most BMW cars, even the E46 3-series, which replaced the E36 3-series you have, has the same problem.  The only way out of it is to replace the control unit.  I had an E36 with a dodgy climate control and I managed to get a second hand unit for 50.
