Why are 4-wheel drive cars referred to as 4x4? I know one of the 4s must refer to the 4 wheels, but what is the other 4 for?

Hi,

4x4 simply means that the vehicle has 4 wheels and that all four wheels are driven.A normal car would be classed as a 4 x 2 as it has four wheels and only the front (or rear ) wheels are driven (connected to the engine via shafts and gearbox etc)

hope That clears it up for you.

just to follow that, Commercial vehicles such as tippers are known as 6x2 or 8x4 to indicate that they have 6 wheels, two of them drive.
