Annoying sound effects

I currently use my housemates PC since it's connected to the only phone socket in the house. I tend to run 3 or 4 programs or browsers at once. My housemates PC is set up so that everytime a window is maximised or minimised it plays sound effects - I usually have media player running and the interruptions get really irritating. Is there anyway to turn this off in a way that I can turn it back on again when I'm finished, without muting the PC volume??
