surprisingly, no particular mandatory requirements that i know of. the trick is, to operate goods vehicles you have to have an operators license. the people at V.O.S.A. check on all sorts of things before you are granted one, and adequate maintainence is just one of the things they require. four to six weeks is good working practice. this is based on the conditions that the truck is working in e.g. high mileage, extreme conditions like site work and so on. the required standard is only a guide and operators are expected to keep much higher standards. they do not take in to account regular service procedures such as oil changes, purely thorough regular inspections and evidence of planned maintanence.
I think you maybe referring to a P.M.I. (periodical ministry inspection) this is carried out at a set period, normally 6 but and can be between 4 weeks to 8 weeks depending on operating conditions and other factors. These inspection and like mini MOTs and are safety related only and have nothing to do with servicing.

Find ouy a bit more about the Inspections on the VOSA website here http://www.vosa.gov.uk/vosa/hgvpsvdrivers/driverresponsibilities/maintainingvehicleroadworthiness.htm

I used to have mine every 6 weeks (on an articulated vehicle), but now I drive a tipper, site conditions mean I have been 'advised' by VOSA to have them every 4 weeks.
