5 Series E39 Bmw Dilema

On releasing the bonnet catch from inside the car, and then when lifting the bonnet, there is a small hooked lever that comes out through the radiator grill which when pulled releases the safety catch and allows the bonnet to raise.
It is not coming out, so I can not get into the engine compartment.
Have tried squirting WD40 up into the area where the safety catch mechanism should be, but to no avail.
Is it a bent coathanger job, or is there a 'secret' ?!

Get someone to work the lever inside the car as you spray WD40 on the Mechanism David.

Someone needs to pull the hook out from the grille while you're pulling the bonnet release lever inside the car.
