Anyone know what the law is on parking a lone trailer on the road? Does it make any difference if it's laden/unladen? It's a trailer normaly used to tow a track car if that makes any difference. I have googled but it's all a bit ambiguous. thanks

As far as I'm aware to be legal if it's on a puplic road it has to be hooked-up to a vehicle that is road-legal.

What sort of trailer?

Lorry? car?
Parking a boat, trailer or caravan on the road is not in itself illegal. contrary to what some people say it doesn't need a registration plate either, in the same way a bicycle doesn't require one because boats, trailers and caravans are not registered with the DVLA therefore have no registration number to display. It does need to be facing the right way with reflectors to the rear.

So the technical answer is yes it can remain parked there without breaking any laws.
However, if it could be claimed to be causing an obstruction the council could become involved and, if no action was taken by the owner, the could have it towed away.

pink kittens, as stated in te question it's a trailer that is normally used to transport a track car.

Graham, thanks so as long as it's facing the right way and has reflectors on it and not causing an obstruction, it would be ok? Can I also leave a car on it?
You could fall foul of the "storing equipment on a public highway" issue, which normally requires a license from the local council.
This from Askthepolice website: https://www.askthe.police.uk/content/Q629.htm
They say it needs to be lit. I would argue that it only needs to be lit in a position where a parked car needs to be lit.
RVLR 1989 Part III Reg 24(3)

Save as provided in paragraphs (5) and (9), no person shall allow to remain parked, or cause or permit to be allowed to remain parked between sunset and sunrise–

(b) a trailer to the front of which no other vehicle is attached and which is not required to be fitted with front position lamps,

unless a pair of front position lamps is fitted and kept lit and unobscured.

Ok Graham so taking your link in conjuction with highway code rule 249/250, I think It would need lights at night as it seems to be specifically covered by rule 250. http://www.direct.gov...Highwaycode/DG_069860

Many thanks.
So it's a smallish trailer then? It could have been a large trailer like those that transport cars
The reason I asked is I was going to mention local weight restrictions could be a deciding factor
LOL...

Errr, Pink-k, are you actually reading any of the responses?
Yep, I did, thanks - but I wanted to say what I was going to say so I did, ner :P
Yes. It would appear that you need lights front and rear of the trailer, just like when someone parks a skip on the road.
