I am looking for a car (no more than 5000 but preferably a lot less). Must be good looking ( I am staring up my own business and need to make sure clients don't see me in the wrong way eg a beaten up old vectra).

Must also be reliable.

Normally buy high mileage cars with a full dealer history that have been maintained well as I see these as the best bargains.

Currently looking at a Vauxhall Omega 2.2CDX dti. Would also consider a Saab 9-3.

Any other ideas of high mileage cars than are realiable, look good and economical?

Cheers

For 5000 or less you can buy a Mercedes, Jaguar, BMW, Audi, Volvo, etc.. put a private plate on it.. for example an Irish plate (250 max with DVLA costs). You could buy a classic or something like a VW Corrado VR6.

For economy you could look for a car that has a diesel version. The Vauxhall Omega is a nice car, and lots of car for your money as they don't cost a lot when used.

How about a Jeep Cherokee?  OK, not really economical. It's hard to get something a little different and economy.. It depends on what size engine you are after, 1.6, 2.0 litre or more?

How about a Honda Civic, get the 5 door version in a black or a dark colour.

The engines are bomb proof and they last forever if looked after, they are a very smart looking car and not the usual run of the mill vectra type that you want to avoid.

For me it would be an old Merc, back when they were properly made, something like a 500SEC with a service history will be just about run in now, and will go round the clock twice without complaint. They have all the toys you will ever need, are fun to drive, and have lots of class.
the best executive car -and the most enjoyable would be a bmw 5 series- like a 523i, could get a 96 model, but for value try the omega in elite trim
in fact most used exec cars are fab value for money , but theres nowt wrong with a top spec mondeo or vectra- all the executive toys, space, comfort and power with family car affordibility(the high spec models are also pretty exclusive compared to run of mill lx models)
nowadays for about 4,500 you can pick a nice bmw m3 they look gorgeous, fast and everyone thinks your loaded, ladys love em to.
