And I found that out using askmid
Now, I know it says on there this
"I understand it is an offence to wrongfully obtain information of this nature without any of the above reasonable causes"
But as he has a different car every few weeks, most of the untaxed, would my checking count as reasonable cause?

And, is there anywhere to report on line rather than calling 101?

Myself, live & let live but if I knew that someone was running around with no Insurance then there WOULD be a phone call, I pay my car Insurance so why should this person get away with it, do not feel Guilty Oj just think what could happen if this person Injured someone? I'm talking about compensation or retrieving compo for your own car's damage.
Just send the Police an anonymous postcard with all the details, they'll take it from there.
Whilst I condemn driving without insurance, you need to realise that you have committed an offence. I hope you get caught and punished as well as your neighbour. Your IP address will have been logged by the AskMID site.
Take no notice of Mother Theresa above. No insurance is a bad crime you'll be doing as all a favour if you get them caught. Electrochem must be a paragon of virtue. The MIS site is used by all and sundry 90% of the time it'll be for cars they don't own, if it was so bad they would not have it. It's not illegal anyway merely against terms and conditions.
Like it or like it not d9f1c7, I am entitled to my opinion. I am also entitled to post on her without abuse and silly name calling. I wouldn't call myself a paragon of virtue and I have made many errors in life for which I have paid the price. If 90% of the population decided to break a law, does that make it right?
It isn't a law

Injured Party (Defined in the under noted declaration).
Representative.

Access to MID via this facility is provided to enable individuals to conduct ad-hoc searches in the event of an accident. It is not designed for continued use by individual parties. If you do require access to this information on a more regular basis, we recommend that you subscribe to an askMID account, else you may find your access denied. Please submit your request for an account via the askMID homepage.

If there has been a motor accident and you need to check the other vehicle is insured, for a nominal charge, search the Motor Insurance Database (MID) to help determine if the other vehicle is insured.

The date of the accident and the registration details of the other vehicle are required to search on askMID. If the registration is found on the MID, you will receive on screen the insurance details: policy number, name of insurer and the claims contact details to help you progress a claim.

We need some information so we can search the MID and provide you with the details that you have requested. This enquiry will be charged at £4.00. Please check the registration numbers entered and incident date are correct.

Please ensure you enter a valid email address as this will be used to send a payment confirmation email, and may be used to send the result of your MID search in rare circumstances where there is a delay and it cannot be displayed immediately on the screen.

An askMID account will allow users at your organisation to make unlimited enquiries of the MID on third party vehicles in connection with Road Traffic Accidents only. You will receive the third party insurance details (policy number, insurer name, and claims contact details).

I am entitled to the insurance information about the vehicle detailed above for one or more of the following reasons: It is either registered/ owned/ insured by me or my employer; I am permitted to drive it; I am an Insurance Broker or agent and acting on behalf of my client.

If I fail to provide true reasons for acquiring this information I may be committing an offence of unlawfully obtaining data contrary to section 55 of the Data protection Act 1998. Not too difficult is it!

thanks all - We have the police in at work this week
I can let them know
if looking on the site was such a terrible crime, you would have to do a lot more than tick a few box anonymously in order to access the information...

Joko, I was wondering that myself - if it's so bad to do it then why is there no charge at all to check?
It appears to be a licence for people to find out whether others on the road are insured
It does say that you can check the other parties car if you're in an accident with them - so why not before they do any damage?

It matters not, I'll chat to the officers in this week :)
I can't post what I really want to in reply to this thread!

LOL, why not? everyone else did :)

Just use the ** key ;-)
OK I don't agree with uninsured drivers but you don't know if he is all you know is that car does not have insurance.

I find what you did sneeky and underhand and worrying that neighbours would do that to each other!
I agree with joko , it is very unlikedly he will get away with driving uninsured the ANPR cameras are every where including in most petrol stations. As you say he has diffent cars all the time he must be dealing in them so it is likedly he had a dealers insurance policy, this allows him to drive any car in his possesion. Further the cars will not register as insured on the data base.
It's really quite simple. If you think someone is driving without insurance, ring the local police station on the non-emergency number and say that you think they are driving uninsured. As stated on the site (see what I copied and pasted from it) it is not there for all and sundry to use for the purposes the poster of the question has stated. Nowhere have I said that obtaining the data illicitly is a terrible offence, nonetheless it is still an offence.
Fried, I can see your point, we do not know the full facts on this, the person might have a block insurance that he / she can use if they are dealing with cars & selling, but on another point what IF this person has no Insurance & he / she injured a child / pensioner / your property /your car how would you feel when you tried to put a claim in & failed?

Sorry had to go to work
You're right FGT, I don;t know the full facts, but what would you do if he wrote your car off and then found out your neighbour new that person wasn't insured?
Is it not better to ask someone to check?
I suppose, with the amount of police cars we do have around here it won't be long before he is caught
This evening I came home and he is in another different car :O
It’s a funny old world.

Here we are discussing whether oj’s neighbour is committing a fairly serious motoring offence which, if left unaddressed, might cause considerable distress and harm to a victim. Suddenly the question of whether anybody else should be entitled to know if such an offence is being committed seems to have become more important.

This just about sums up the philosophy on criminality in the UK. Joe Public must under no circumstances avail himself of the information provided by the latest technology. Oh No! He has to wait until the miscreant damages his property or, worse still, damages his health for which he will have no redress. Far better to protect the criminal by denying that information to those with a vested interest.

Why should anybody who has insured their vehicle be worried about anybody else checking that they have done so? No personal data is disclosed during that check. The only people who should be worried are those with no insurance. Oh Dear. How Sad. What a Shame.

Everybody who suspects that uninsured vehicles are being driven in their locality has a legitimate reason to check whether they are insured. They should be able to do a simple, legitimate check without fear of prosecution. They need not then trouble the police if their fears are unfounded but can help the police by reporting their confirmed suspicions when it seems an offence is being committed. What can possibly be wrong with that?

thank you New Judge
I will be doing something about it - I would feel awful if anything happened knowing that I knew that piece of information
