White or grayish smoke is usually an indication of engine coolant finding its way into the combustion cylinder(s).  Probably a blown head gasket.  Have the garage pull the spark plugs, pressurize the radiator and wait for about an hour.  Then when the engine is cranked with the starter, you'll likely see coolant being spewed out of one or more cylinders... Good luck, though...
We used to get the Carbon Monoxide (CO) tuner pipe and stick it in the top of the coolant expansion tank (ensuring not to put it in the coolant!!!!).  If the head gasket was gone then the CO tuner would pick up CO gas from the expansion tank.  Worked 95% of the time.
