Does anyone know where i can find a list of common engine faults on a Vauxhall Vectra 1.8 sri 130? My dad has just bought one and on the way home from picking it up has had to get it towed home because of a knocking noise (he was advised by AA not to drive any further), can anyone please shed some light. TIA

Could be a valve or big end but you probably are aware of this. Shame the AA didnt tow it to where your dad bought it for a refund! Hope you have a good local mechanic that can check it and it doesnt work out to be anything too drastic or expensive!
Was the car bought " Tried tested approved? If you cannot get a refund or if the seller is trying it on, contact trading standards & state that to the seller.

sound seems tobe coming form lower end of engine, we've taken the sump off and the shield inside is intact and not loe which we originally expected, we are now wondering wether it could be big end bearings or main bearings. any other suggestions welcome, sound only there when engine rev'd, and gets worse when engine is warmer.
It sounds like the Shell Bearing have gone Benny, ask your Dad to take the car back to where he bought it & DEMAND a refund, if the seller tries it on, explain that the Trading Standards will be informed, give the seller a chance to sort it out but for your Dads sake, reject the car & demind a refund.

thanks for all answers, we found the problem, it is the 2nd cylinder big end bearing, it has obviously got some water or dirt in there at some point, suspect it was when head gasket went a while back, this dirt caused the bearing to press against its seating and compressed the retaining notches causing it to lose its position and spin freely. again thanks for all help.
A shell rotates after it has worn badly.
You need a crank regrinding and undersize shell set.
Inspect mains carefully.

No oil .. severe overrevving ... detonation on that cylinder due to water in combustion chamber .. are all likely causes.
