Buy it online today?
It needs to be kept off the public highway until you get the new tax disc
Declare it SORN as soon as the tax runs out - you can do it online and it is easy to tax when you are able to

Buy it online then you don't have to pay until your credit card bill comes in
Probably not going to be popular and I wouldnt recommend this to you but if i were in your situation I would trust that I wouldnt be caught and use it anyway. You intend to pay and it isnt the crime of the century.
Not if I had to park it on the public highway though - the traffic wardens will almost certainly get yer.
Squitty, there is an increase now in police using ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) cameras, so the chance of being caught is increasing.
Using a credit card to pay has a 2.50 surcharge

Agree Panicbutton - I would take the chance. Having said that I would also take the fine if I did get caught.
Had my reminder today. If you buy online or by phone they will give you 5 days grace to display your new disc.
I think 2.50 is cheap to keep using your car
without road tax, your insurance MAY be null and void if you had a prang ?

if you are caught without tax you will get a fine but when you tax your car that tax will start from the first of the month so you will not be defrauding the vehicle licensing agency by driving from now until then..i always assumed that you had two weeks grace as you can tax your car at the post office using the renewal form for up to two weeks after your tax has expired..after that you must go to or send it to the dvla.
your insurance CANNOT be void if you have no tax or mot as the law states that an insurance company who have entered into a contract with you (by taking your money and providing you with an insurance certificate) MUST honour any third party claims made against you.
however bear in mind that the police anpr cameras are used more often now than ever so you do stand a great chance of being caught driving an untaxed vehicle...to drive or not to drive....that is the question! ;0)
I don't know where you live but if you're out & about & park your car up, there is always the chance you would come back to it and find it clamped.
That 14 day grace has not been in effect for many years and you can be fined the day after your road tax runs out - a defence is you have bought it online, but you will need to show proof.
If you've bought on line or over the phone you are allowed 5 days grace.
The 14 days grace is obsolete as far as I know
as i said mrs o...if you are caught you will get a fine or indeed clamped..and...to drive or not to drive...it's a question that only joko can answer..it makes no difference where i live,uk law is uk law.
gonzo00 - I must be losing the plot because I've read and re-read your answer and can't see any reference you made to clamping.
I know the law is the same throughout the land, but there are variations. I live in the sticks. We have no traffic wardens and local police don't own a clamp!
Like you say, it's up to joko to decide if he wants to risk it.

Off to make the tea now.
