My wiper motor has just packed up and quoted 170 for a new one. As I dont want a wiper motor that is worth more than the car would it be an MOT failure item if not working? My MOT is due in just over a week and I may not be able to source a cheaper motor before then. Thank you

I'm sure you dont need it mending as not all cars have a rear wiper. Mine doesnt always work and they've never mentioned anything to me. It is not compulsary
According to this site, http://www.getinlane.com/page78.php the rear wipers are not part of the test.
Don't know what car you're driving but I got one for a Fiesta last week for 15 from a scrappy - Fitted in 15 minutes with a spanner and a screwdriver.

Try Ebay

Thank you all for the answers. Being half term I wont get time prior to the MOT to fix it but al least it doesnt seem I need to before then. A scrapyard and ebay here I come, but I had best park my Astra away from the scrapyard else it may just blend in! Thanks again.
Strongly suggest you invest in a Haynes manual like this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Vauxhall-1991-98-Servi ce-Repair-Manuals/dp/1859605885

(just do a search if it's the wrong year)

Lots of pictures, it will step you through how to do jobs like this
it is NOT an MOT failure as it is not part of the test
I once bought an old Audi, and the wiper hadn't worked for years.

I dismantled it, freed it up with WD 40 and got the old motor going again.

Moral - it might not be the motor, just corrosion and grime sticking it.
My car has passed the last 3 years MOTs with a knackered rear wiper... not part of the test.
