Road Angel GPS

I have borrowed one of these from a friend whilst they are away. There are no instructions with it. I can get it to plan a route, and it tells me out loud when there are speed cameras approaching, but i cant get the voice on to tell me directions whilst i am driving. Anyone know what i need to do - it isnt on mute either.
