fiesta mk3 1.1 not starting

i have recently purchased a ford fiesta for �50, knowing that it didnt start. i was told it had a faulty MAP sensor. so i bought a new one and sure enough it started, however would just stall as soon as i took my foot of the throttle. when i tried to start it the next day it wouldn't,it would turn over,just wouldnt start.
has anyone got any suggestions as to what the problem might be. i thought maybe change the air filter and clean the spark plugs.

p.s. i was wondering whether a car using a carburetor would have a idle control valve?
