peugeot 306 cab 1996 cutting out

My clutch has become very stiff and spongy, as I was driving home from work tonight it kept cutting out and the battery light and the ! light came on. Any ideas, Bev.

The ! Light is a warning that something is wrong with your car, obviously this must be the clutch, probably because the clutch fluid needs topping up.

The battery light coming on means your battery is not being charged.

Why these two faults should occur at the same time is mistifying!

Well so far as I know 306 have a clutch cable, so the probable fault is that the engine earth cable has broken and the only way for the electric current to return to the battery is along the clutch cable which has probably been overheated and damaged by the starter current, this would also explain the other electrical problems as they are all engine related electrical items and they are not getting a good earth to work correctly.
