Vectra Fuel Computer 2 Mpg Readings

Freind has Vectra cdti - its display screen in centre console shows gallons in tank , and next menu another shows gallons used -(simple so far )
Both show mpg readings aswell - but both give different readings one says 37 mpg and the other 28mpg.These readings are showing with just even ignition meaning it can't be instant and average mpg
Any ideads?
