Do car batteries still need topping up?

I always used to top up the battery in my car with distilled water. I often wonder why it is that this no longer seems to be necessary. Or is it? I would do it if it prolongs the life of my battery. What is the opinion of you motoring experts?

Most batteries in modern cars are sealed for life.
It depends on the battery/type of vehicle. Many modern cars have 'sealed-for-life' batteries which do not require topping up with distilled water. On the other hand I have a 20 year old 'Webb' battery lawnmower which does need topping up when it is put on charge.
Both sealed and unsealed batteries are available though most are now sealed.

If you have a battery with the caps on that you can unscrew then you should keep the acid at the correct level to make sure it works properly.
