I was born there and left aged 18 and 42 days.
Its a very bleak place in terms of the culture and was very hard hit by the closure of its Steelworks in 1980. A working class town with only a small middle class due to the labour party constraining the building of middle class housing until the 1970s.
There is a lot of drugs there too but some absolutely great people.
For those who choose to go for it Corby is a "Can do place" but people tend to make their money and are "Forced" to live in the villages outside including the County of Rutland the third richest place in Britain.
So don't trust the stats! Anyway quiet suburban alcohol abuse goes on everywhere so I would be careful of throwing too many stones?
But Corby is architecturally a butt ugly place but with great shopping!

And I believe that the great Wonder World fiasco caused a stagnation in the town after the steelworks closed down.
