Holloway tonight, I cried.
I cried laughing at the way they said they had such a hard life for breaking the law.
No wonder they are not happy being locked up with, 3 meals a day, gym, manicure's, TV in their cells, have party's, computer access etc, all free, but we are paying.
I don't think I will sleep tonight, thinking about how hard their lives are.

So would it make you happy if they were treated badly, thrown in a cell with bread and water and then let out to face the world again with even bigger chips on their shoulders and more likely to commit more horrendous crimes.
Some of those youngsters have never known a family life, never been shown any love and have no role models to relate to. This is probably the first time they have ever been treated with any respect or felt part of a 'family'. At least the prison officers are trying to educate them into how normal life can be and give them a structured lifestyle, which may give them a better chance on release of fitting in.
I am not a 'woolly' liberal, just in case I get accused. Just someone who thinks things through and realises that there but for the grace of god go I.

I absolutely agree Lottie. It's sad. Not 'sad' pathetic, but sad in that some of these youngsters have never known a normal family life or had any pride in themselves until they're thrown in prison.
Hard core criminals - that's a different story, but most of the kids featured in this tv programme were just that - kids who had had a crap upbringing. It may be tempting for them to want to go back inside though.... but hopefully they will leave to become better people.

Last night it annoyed the hell out of me. Do they not realise that they are in there because they have done something wrong and this is called punishment and not going off to a holiday camp for a while. I am not suggesting for one minute that they should be treated badly, however they have the prison officers running round after them like badly behaved kids, who seem to get their own way.

Actually Jimmy being imprisoned is the punishment - the lack of freedom. Prisons are not there to inflict punishment on people at all.
Whilst I would agree with Salla about hardened criminals, these girls in Holloway are totally different. Holloway is not a prison for hardened criminals.

Tizzy - who knows what you may turned out like in different circumstances. Most of these young girls have lived in dreadful circumstances, probably in families where crime is acceptable. Do you really think that denying them and depriving them in prison will help them to become better citizens?

In which case, the girls that feel as though it is their only option have slipped through the net of a society who should pick up on the girls before this happens.
Holloway is a place for people who have broken the law and although their punishment is being locked away it makes a mockery of the reason why they are in there when they get to do what they want by blatently lighting fires until they get what they want. One girl smashed tvs up. Who pays for the tvs in the first place? Us..... they get to watch the tv's all night if they want. To me that is not punishment. I don't let my daughter watch TV all night and she hasn't broken the law.
They have broken the law, they should be punished at least in a way that deters them from doing it again, not making it so cushy it is preferable to making a go of life on the outside.
