in the mid 80s remember watching what i think was a tv series about life after neuclear war , am sure part was set in welsh valley where scientific sientist in proctetive space suit finds no radiation , he takes off suit and unfortuneatly drinks and washes in contaminated stream water and gets ill is looked after by girl survivor in village!, was convinced was anthony andrews or michael york,

I believe there has been another series with a similar name in recent years.
You mean "Z for Zacharia". We were made to read the book at school. The book was set in the US. I think you're right about Anthony Andrews being in the TV version.

It's a teen fic book, set in American Amish country, although the 1980s TV dramatisation was set in Wales, I believe. It starred Anthony Andrews, as you say, and Pippa Hinchley as Ann Burden.
We had to read the book at school and then they made us watch the film. It was definitely Anthony Andrews. I don't remember it being set in the US though. My memory isn't what it used to be.
