He's gotta be dreaming, more to the point,assuming he lives, might he be required to attend a funeral or reunion where he meets Gene in the present?

i think gene is in the future as he is................... but they class him as "old school" and thats why he is in the 70's

i also think that the woman copper is his girlfriend in the future and he is falling in love with her again!!
