What a coincidence. I asked this last night on the Torchwood page on IMDb, and the general opinion (and we are talking about real fans here!) is it has never been explained how he got there. They seem to think (or hope) that all will become clear with future episodes of Dr Who or Torchwood, but I'm not so sure.
Captain Jack was a "Time Agent" in the 51st Century; he told the Doctor and Rose he left after having two years of his memories stolen. He then became a conman, attempting to trick Time Agents into paying him money.

Although it has yet to be revealed how Jack comes to be in the 21st century, producer Phil Collinson hinted that it involved the Cardiff space-time rift.

The most likely explanation is that he came through the rift.In The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances wasn't Jack's ship capable of time travel? If so,then tie travel technology exists somewhere and as an ex time agant Jack would know where.
One of the things I like about Torchwood is that the more you learn about Jack the less you know.
Ok, i wasnt going to bother asking this question but as this threads here i will.

When Gwen and the rest of the posse tried to find out about Captian Jack Harkness they were unable to find any information, however if Jack took the name from an actual Jack Harkness who was shot down in 1941 why did the search not bring up information about him?
As I recall, it did bring up that info - can't remember verbatim but they discovered the only record for that name was during the war, and nothing since.
Oh yes i remember that now, but i think when i seen that i thought it was referring to his appearence with Rose and The Doctor on the night of the blitz, ill probably need to catch that episode again : /
I think Captain Jack did answer this question very briefly Englandfan.
In the episode where the people from 1953 ended up in the present day "CJ " was talking to the man from the Fifties and told him that he had fallen through time . and as in earlier episodes he flashed back to 1910 he probably landed there and got to the present day the slow way . As he cannot die he probably does not age either.:-D
I watched all of Torchwood and I got the impression that the writers were kind of making it up as they went along.

For instance the Owen/Gwen thing ended as soon as it started. It came from nowhere and then just disappeared.

One episode ended with Ianto and Jack getting it on. I guess he'd gotten over his girlfriend then. Oh and now he's bi.

The rift machine used in the final two parts - where did that come from? It was never mentioned before.

Good programme though.
The doctor mentions that he has a son in one episode.. could this be Captain Jack????
The Doctor says that he was a father/parent once,I don't think he specifies a son. However this has been picked up on as something they might use as a way of going beyond the Doctor's 12 regenerations.Somehow I don't think Captain Jack's feelings for The Doctor are filial.
England fan. Is what you are asking - how did he get from satellite 5 to torchwood as the Dr and rose went off in the tardis without him.
Question Author
yes I am asking " - how did he get from satellite 5 to torchwood as the Dr and rose went off in the tardis without him"
Probably by spaceship from Satellite 5 to Earth and then to Cardiff in that era and through the rift to Torchwood.
Unless he used his knowledge as a time agent to find find or build time travel technology.
maybe he was here already?
